How transfers work at Caps Armory
Every firearm and ammunition transfer on this platform must complete at Caps Armory — a licensed Federal Firearms License (FFL) holder — under California Penal Code §27545. Private-party face-to-face transfers without an FFL are illegal in California, including for long guns. Anyone who tells you otherwise is attempting to break the law.
The 6-step transfer process
- You reserve a listing on 2a.com.
- Caps Armory contacts seller + buyer to confirm an appointment within the 24-hour reservation hold.
- Both parties arrive at Caps Armory: TBD — Caps Armory address
- Seller hands the firearm to the FFL. Buyer pays the seller for the item, plus the PPT transfer fee (currently ~$50.00; California Penal Code §28055 caps the DROS fee at $35 for a private-party transfer).
- Buyer completes the DROS background check at the FFL. Valid California driver's license or ID required. Handgun buyers must be 21+; long-gun buyers must be 18+.
- 10-day waiting period begins. After 10 days, if the background check clears, buyer returns to pick up the firearm. No exceptions — the waiting period is enforced by the California Department of Justice.
Ammunition transfers
Ammunition sales also require an in-person eligibility check at a California ammunition vendor under Penal Code §30352. Caps Armory is a licensed ammunition vendor and handles the eligibility check on the same visit.
Red flags — walk away
Never meet a buyer or seller outside Caps Armory. Never accept any deal that says "no FFL needed." Private-party long-gun sales without an FFL are illegal in California (Penal Code §27545). If a counterparty pushes for a parking-lot meet, cash-app payment, or "we'll handle paperwork later," report the listing and stop communicating.
